Nico is a highly versatile halfback who thrives at both scrumhalf and flyhalf. Known for his sharp game intelligence, quick decision-making and accuracy around the breakdown, he brings a dynamic edge to every match he plays.

A standout from a young age, Steyn captained Glenwood High School’s first XV in 2020, earning the NextGenXV MVP award for his exceptional performances at schoolboy level. His talent was further recognised when he represented the South Africa Schools Sevens team in 2019 and made his Junior Springbok debut in 2021.

In 2022, he would go on to make his Currie Cup and United Rugby Championship debuts for the Lions, proving his ability to quickly adapt to professional level. His versatility, including his ability to slot in at flyhalf, has made him a key asset to his franchise.

Steyn’s leadership qualities came to the fore in 2024 when he captained the Lions in the EPCR Challenge Cup, reinforcing his potential to succeed at the highest level. With his skillset, relentless work ethic and leadership, he is one of South African rugby’s brightest prospects for the future.
